Eco-Ranger Full Moon Picnic a Success

On Friday the 7th November, nature and outdoor enthusiasts joined the Helderberg Eco-Rangers for a picnic on the lawns of the Helderberg Nature Reserve. The weather was perfect with a still night, clear skies, majestic full moon and comfortable temperatures. While picnics were enjoyed at leisure, the crowd relaxed with a glass of wine and some snacks while a delicate golden light was cast over them as the sun set.

Children enjoyed a fun filled craft of making their own lantern which they could then use to take a walk under the light of the moon. It was a spectacular sight to see over 60 lanterns being carried by children and their families. Finally, the walk ended with a stroll around the dam with the bright moon reflecting in the waters. Budding astronomers and those fascinated with the skies were able to stop for a moment and enjoy a close up encounter with moon through powerful telescopes while the ‘Star people’ guided them and shared fascinating facts and information. It was a fabulous night enjoyed by all and we hope to hold another event like this in the near future.

Thank you to all of you who supported the Helderberg Eco-Rangers and thank you to all those behind the scenes who worked so hard to make this event happen. Claudia Schuster for all the purchasing of materials, liasing with necessary parties, organisation from behind the scenes and helping with the craft, Wendy Coke-Norris for handling all the admin, bookings, PR and marketing, art and design as well as playing an essential role in the craft planning. Andreas Groenewald for conducting the moonlight walk and assisting at the education centre, Auke Slotegraaf, Edward Foster and Lynnette Foster of Star People for their time, expertise and sharing of their knowledge regarding our magnificent skies. Karen Ross for all the help in the craft department. Sean Dilton-Hill and Helmut Schuster for manning the gates. Chris Lochner for helping with parking, lantern making and telescope viewing. Yolanda Engelbrecht for much needed help with the lantern making. And then we have Cheryl Coke-Norris – a BIG thank you for helping out on the night and for assisting with all the prep work for the Lantern making. We could not have managed without you.

And thank you to Gavin Coke-Norris of Sunshine Juices for supplying the card board for the Lantern bases. Not only did he supply . . . he and his family also gave up a Sunday to sit and cut the card circles for each Lantern. And the children who are so often overlooked . . . Tara (the youngest at age 4) for helping with collecting and pressing leaves and Kieran for cutting many lantern frames out. Nikola thank you for all the leaves and flowers you pressed. And a thank you to the families of Claudia and Wendy . . . you lost us for three weeks – your support, patience and understanding are much appreciated. Each and every one of you played a part in making this evening as successful as it was. Finally, thank you to the Helderberg Nature reserve for the venue. Funds raised from this event will be put towards the running costs, purchasing of materials and equipment for this essential nature and environmental education group.

We hope everyone had a fantastic, fun filled evening under the light of bright moon.

If anyone has any great photos from the night . . . please share them. Unfortunately our team was too busy on the night to focus on photography. You can send them to Wendy who will post them on the page and we will mention who took the photo.
